Seward Wins National Chess Title

Seward Montessori - 1st Place K-6 U1000 at USCF Nationals

The Seward Montessori Sharks Chess Club sent six students to Dallas, TX, from May 8 -12, 2014 to compete in the USCF (United States Chess Federation) National Elementary Championship. This chess tournament included more than 2200 students from thirty-seven states. 604 teams competed in the twelve sections of the tournament.

After a strong performance on Saturday, the Seward K-6 U1000* team of Noah Muller, Nelson Munene, Marshall Urban and Tiger Worku hung on to first place through both of Sundays two rounds. Both Soren Kung and Malcolm Munene had a successful experience playing in the K-5 and K-3 sections. *This section requires that all players have USCF Rating of less than 1000.

The K-6 team scrapped for every point including two 3+ hour matches by Marshall. In a field of 238 players (and 35 teams) Noah finished 130th, Tiger 22nd and Marshall and Nelson
