Congratulations to the Seward Sharks Chess Club: MSCA Scholastic State Team Champions in both K–3 and K–5! Seward sent 14 students to the Minnesota State Chess Association’s Scholastic Chess Championship at St. Catherine’s University on March 25th, 2017. The K–5 and K–3 teams played 5 rounds and finished as the first place team in both sections! Seward’s team members were Noah Muller (K–8); Riley Vang, Jack Karlen, Anderson Beck, Dinkenesh Kendrick, Noah Weiser, Theo Cornell, Peter Scholtz, and Malcolm Munene (K–5); and Lola Rocksusto, Alex Karlen, Ryan Beck, Lily Bauer, and Lasai Rocksusto (K–3).

The chess club also sent 12 players to the School Chess Association’s Statewide Primary and Elementary Chess Championship on April 8th and 9th, 2017. This large tournament had over 350 total competitors in the K–3 and K–6 sections. The Championship was held at Breck School in Golden Valley and consisted of 7 rounds—five on Saturday and two on Sunday. Seward K–3 team members Lola Rocksusto, Lily Bauer, Ryan Beck, Lasai Rocksusto and Alex Karlen finished 11th out of 25 teams and brought home a trophy for one of the best regional teams. Seward K–6 team members Andy Beck, Malcolm Munene, Peter Scholtz, Dinkenesh Kendrick, Noah Weiser, Jack Karlen, and Riley Vang brought home the 5th place team trophy (out of 32 teams).

A sponsor (with deep pockets) is being sought to support continued access to the ChessKid online resource for Minneapolis Public School (MPS) students. If you are aware of anyone that might entertain this possibility (or for any other questions about chess at Seward or in MPS), please contact Pete Munene at

Seward’s Chess Club is coached by Pete Munene and Tim Couture, who are now helping prepare Seward’s SuperNationals competition team for their upcoming matches in May.
