Seward Wins Two State Chess Titles

The Seward Montessori Sharks Chess Club takes first place K-6 team trophy at the 2014 MSCA* State Scholastic Championships on March 29-30, 2014.

Team members are sixth-graders Masango Akale, Nelson Munene, Marshall Urban and Tiger Worku. Nelson Munene also finished 8th amongst all K-6 competitors.  

Seward also won the 2nd place team trophy for the K-3 division with first-grader Malcolm Munene and second-grader Anderson Beck finishing 6th and 9th place respectively among all K-3 competitors. Congratulations to these Seward students for a very successful week of chess!

Congratulations to the Seward Montessori Sharks Chess Club for defending its title against 32 other teams and placing first in the 2014 SCA** Statewide Primary/Elementary Championship (K-6) on March 22-23, 2014. Congratulations also to Capital Hill in St. Paul who were declared co-champions based on points.

Seward will send three players on to the K-3 Primary (Malcolm Munene, 1st gr.) and K-6 Elementary (Masango Akale & Marshall Urban, 6th gr.) Tournament of Champions--a tournament of the top 16 primary and top 16 elementary finishers at the state tournament. Tiger Worku won the 3rd place trophy for 6th graders not in the top 16. There were over 200 players in each of the Primary and Elementary sections. Winning the K-6 title two years in a row is an impressive feat!

Seward Chess Club members competing at the SCA State tournament were: Masango Akale, Kareem Alkhaleefa, Andy Beck, Sam Kendrick, Soren Kung, Noah Muller, Nelson Munene, Malcolm Munene, Emory Russell, Marshall Urban, and Tiger Worku.

The Seward Chess Club will be sending seven players to the National Elementary (K-6) Championship in Dallas, TX, May 9-11.
