Pete's Room (103)

Hello Seward Community!

I can scarcely begin to explain my excitement, joy, and reverence at becoming a member of the Seward team!  To work in education and a school is a privilege and honor that I do not take lightly.  As a lifelong learner and fairly new parent, I can begin to appreciate how important it is to cultivate an environment of learning and respect in the classroom that welcomes anyone and everyone who steps through our doors.

From 2002-2006 I studied Psychology and Communication Studies at the University of Minnesota and earned my Bachelor of Arts degree.  After that I experienced living and working in the Mountains of Colorado for a winter but was drawn back to Minnesota.  From 2007 until 2014 I worked in the Edina Community Education program as a middle school leader.   Since 2008 I have worked in the Minneapolis Public School District in varying positions (AVID tutor, Special Education Assistant, Autism Teacher).  From 2013-2016, I attended Hamline University and received my Minnesota K-6 Elementary teaching license.  This summer (2017) I began my Montessori training at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.  I have come to realize that I love school and truly am a lifelong learner.

My wife Laura and I were blessed with our first child in June of 2015.  It is hard to believe that our little girl is already 2 years old!  We are a family that loves animals.  We have 1 pet cat named Gizmo (6 years. Old) and 1 pet dog named Topaz (2 years old) and often watch pets for friends and family when they travel.  As a family we love playing at parks, riding bikes, going on walks, visiting with friends and families, going to Twins baseball games, swimming, and pretty much anything outside.  I enjoy running and biking when free time presents itself, but it is the most fun sharing my interests and hobbies with my daughter as she continues to grow.

On a historical note, my Grandmother was a teacher in Minneapolis for 30 years and was actually a STUDENT at Seward in the 1930’s!  We truly are where we are as a result of those who have come before us.  I very much look forward to meeting everyone and cannot wait to begin building memories for what will be a positive and productive school year!

My humblest and highest regards,

Pete Mattsson
