November 2019

Dear Seward Families,

I cannot believe it is November already! The year is going by so quickly and the weather is turning colder sooner than most of us would like. As the winter months approach, please remember to send your students with winter clothing. This includes hats, gloves/mittens, a winter coat, snow pants, and boots. The students will continue to go outside for thirty minutes each day unless the weather is below zero degrees Fahrenheit. Please label your student’s belongings, as often they get misplaced during these months and end up in our lost and found, which is located in the Multipurpose Room, behind the Main Office (go around the offices clockwise to get there).

This fall we have had a shortage of reserve teachers in Minneapolis. As a result, we have had several days when a teacher was out sick and we were unable to get a Reserve Teacher to teach their class. When this happens, we ask other teachers in the building to give up their prep time to cover the class. Therefore, children in those classrooms got to see several Seward teachers that day. Our staff are amazing, and we appreciate how much they help each other out, but it is difficult for teachers to give up their time to prepare for instruction. If you are aware of parents, neighbors, or people in your networks that may be interested in reserve teaching with Minneapolis Public Schools (our school district), please send them our way. For more information about Reserve Teacher opportunities, email the Reserve Desk at reservedesk@mpls.k12.mn.us or apply online at jobs.mpls.k12.mn.us.

A few parents recently asked me what a “Record Keeping Day” is. Basically, they wanted to know why students do not have school on November 1st, January 17th, and March 27th. Record Keeping Days are built into our calendar at the end of each quarter so that our teachers have time to do their grading, report cards, and planning.

Thank you for being an amazing parent community. Please let us know if you have any questions or need anything.

Best,
