Dear Seward Families:

What an amazing start to the 2015–16 school year! I can’t say enough about the Seward staff for supporting each other while unpacking and re-establishing classrooms as learning spaces (as opposed to construction space). I also thank the parents who were able spend time helping us prepare the building for our students.

The construction and renovation project is going extremely well. We can see progress made on a daily basis and the kids frequently comment on what they see. There have been and will be bumps in the road while we work/live through the construction. I want you to know safety and security for Seward students, staff, and parents are a top priority. The construction project managers check in with me at least once per day and ask about safety and noise concerns. In addition, I have them on “speed dial” and can connect with them quickly. They have been responsive and helpful, and I am grateful that we have a good working relationship.

We have started using a new and safer route in and out of our lunchroom. Students will be routed through the gym and the park to get to and from breakfast and recess. Door 8 is now open as well. Many thanks to Bill, our teachers, and our support staff for being flexible and taking the time to make sure our kids are safe.

A focus for our staff this year is on a “growth mind-set.” We are reading Carol Dweck’s book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. The premise is that ability can be developed through effort and dedication, as opposed to believing that talent alone leads to success. A growth mind-set also supports the development of perseverance and learning from our mistakes. I encourage you to read the book, too, and see the attached Dweck Mindset Chart.
