December 2016

Dear Seward Families,

We are having a fantastic fall at Seward. Students and staff are utilizing all the new learning spaces in the building, especially the media center. Sarah Rose, our media and technology teacher, and Ali Tennent, our media AE, have done an outstanding job introducing students to the new media center. Students are checking out books, using the small rooms for classroom projects, and teachers are collaborating with Sarah to extend students’ learning in the classroom.

On November 17th, we celebrated Native American Family Involvement Day. The students participated in a presentation of drumming and singing by two Native drummers followed by activities and a luncheon for families. Students also tried manoomin (Ojibwe for “wild rice”) salad for the True Food Taste Test. The goal of the taste test is to get students excited to try new foods, and students are offered samples during lunch. Seward will participate in a total of three taste tests this year along with 35 other Minneapolis Public Schools.

As winter approaches and the weather gets colder, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for school (this includes hats, mittens, snow pants, and boots). Students will continue to go outside for recess unless the wind chill is below zero. In the case of inclement weather, please listen to the radio, check local news channels, and check the district website for school closures.

In addition, when dropping your child off or picking them up from school, please make sure to park on the street or in the parking lot. Please do not park in the yellow curb part of the driveway or in the loading dock parking lot. We need these areas clear in case of emergency and for deliveries at the school.

Thank you for your continued support of Seward Montessori. Let us continue to have a great school year.
