Seward Class Meets Nobel Prize Winner

Lynda’s students attended the Nobel Peace Prize Forum Youth Festival at Augsburg College, a special event designed for students and sponsored by the Norwegian Nobel Peace Prize. The Festival provides an opportunity for young people to learn about and celebrate peacemaking, and to meet a Nobel Prize Laureate. In preparation for the event, the students collaborated with a class of students from Augsburg college who were also studying the narratives of Nobel Prize Winners.

Leymah Gbowee helped bring an end to the Civil War in Liberia by leading a nonviolent movement of Christians and Muslims through her leadership in the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011.

The students wrote a peace statement which Ms. Gbowee signed. She also put on a peace bracelet that the students made. The students prepared 8 interactive poster boards that described 8 Nobel Prize winners. Visitors to the festival could match quotes and information about the winners to their photos. The students were very excited that Ms Gbowee personally visited their booth and met with them.
