Welcome to the Science Specialist's Page!

Karen Utter

I have been teaching at Seward Montessori since 1995. I have been teaching Science here since 2010.  Prior to working at Seward I taught at Friends School of Minnesota for 7 years. I received my BA from Hobart William Smith, my M.Ed and Elementary License from Lesley College, and my Montessori Certification from St. Catherine's.

This year I am teaching science to 1st - 5th grade.

I primarily use the FOSS science kits www.fossweb.com and the Engineering is Elementary kits https://www.eie.org. My focus is on inquiry based science that provides hands on experiences as well as opportunities to communicate our findings through conversation and writing. The 4th and 5th grade students have science notebooks that they use weekly.

The classroom teachers also teach science in their rooms. They teach Montessori Science lessons and one other area of study. The E1 teachers teach the Sun, Moon, and Stars. They are using some combination of Montessori lessons and the FOSS kit. The E2 team loop the FOSS kits: Environments and Landforms

Some of our ELL teachers are reinforcing the science curriculum for the ELL students by teaching reading and writing through the hands-on experiences they have in science class.

Please feel free to email me with any questions at kutter@mpls.k12.mn.us.
