"An interesting piece of work, freely chosen, which has the virtue of inducing
concentration rather than fatigue, adds to the child’s energies and mental
capacities (leading to) self-mastery." -Dr Maria Montessori

The Montessori classroom supports the engagement of children in purposeful work.
The classroom environment has been carefully prepared to be both beautiful and functional.
The physical design, furniture and curriculum support the child’s independence and innate
impulse for self-development. Each child learns at her own pace.

Montessori classrooms have mixed ages that typically fall into three year groupings:
3-6 years of age, 6-9 years of age, or 9-12 years of age. Over time the children create
a "normalized community" together. Normalization refers to the process a child undergoes
as he develops self-discipline and the ability to focus through work in the environment.
Having materials that captivate the child’s attention is the key to encouraging this focus.
