7th Grade Service Projects
by Mary Delander

On Thursday, April 27th, our 7th graders participated in our annual service projects. Seward Montessori is planting the seeds of volunteerism in our students. This experience offers a unique opportunity for students to talk with each other and with staff about important issues that they do not always have time to address in the classroom. It gives students a real chance to think about and develop their sense of empathy and giving.

Here’s what we did this year: At Matthews Park, students washed 52 chairs, 7 tables, and all the windows in the Recreation Room. They cleaned the kitchen, vacuumed 2 rugs, and mopped all the floors. Ann Green reported that the teamwork was impressive. Students worked hard and eagerly asked if they could do more. Thanks to Park Director Scott Krueger for gathering projects for the students.

At Feed My Starving Children, Sharks packed enough food to feed 67 children for an entire year.

At the Food Group, students packed 7,475 pounds of produce, pinto beans, and canned corn. Parent volunteer Carla Urban said, “I really enjoyed the day. It was so cool to see the kids packing the produce boxes settle into a really hard-working team and having fun doing it. I’m SO glad that I went.”

Many thanks to the PTA (that’s you, parents!) for providing the funding for this important off-campus field trip!
