Tip #2:  Talk with your child about the books you read together

  • How did the story begin?
  • How did the story end?
  • Did you like the story? Why?
  • Where did the story take place?
  •  What was your favorite part of the story?
  • Which character did you like best? Why
  • What do you think will happen next? Why?
  • What facts did you learn from the book?

Tip #3:  Allow time for your child to think when they are stuck on a tricky word.

Ask yourself the following questions to help your child solve words:

  • Does it make sense?
  • Does it sound right?
  • Does that look right?

Tip #4 Praise your child while they are reading.

  • I liked how you were reading like you talk.
  • I liked the way you noticed that mistake and fixed it yourself.
  • I like how you were suing expression.
