Dear Seward Families:

As you know we are returning to the traditional Montessori classroom configuration of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade in our E-1 classrooms. Many of you have contacted me or your child’s teacher with questions about how this will be done. Teachers will place students in classrooms per our Policy on Balanced Classrooms. Classroom assignments for E-1 and E-2 students will be on your child’s spring report card. Please note:

  1. Siblings and cousins will not be placed in the same room
  2. Classrooms will be balanced using factors such as: grade, ethnicity, gender, achievement, behavior, special needs, EL status and making sure each student has a peer to work with—it will not always be at his/her grade level.
  3. Parent requests for specific teachers are not recognized. Parents can describe their child’s learning style or particular needs. This information will be considered in the classification process and will be shared with the new teacher.

The feedback I received about last year’s classification process has been very positive. The teachers strive to place students where they will be successful and we are committed to the Balancing Policy.

Finally, testing season is upon us. Test taking can cause a lot of anxiety for some students. Kaisa Lee, our school counselor, has several ideas to help students and parents. Please make sure your child eats a good breakfast every morning, gets enough sleep, and is aware of how to use a self-calming strategy before taking a test. Some examples of that can be: deep breathing (inhaling for 5 seconds and exhaling for 5 seconds), chewing gum, and positive self-talk (“I can do this. All I can do is my best.”)

Thank you for your on-going support.

Sincerely,

Tammy Goetz
