In 2011, eight of our E-1 teachers decided to try teaching two grade levels rather than three as a way to focus on two sets of academic standards. Three of our classrooms in E-1 continued to teach three grade levels. The agreement was to implement this model for three years.
The teachers and I have looked at outcomes, reviewed staff surveys, and listed the pros and cons of each situation.
UPDATE March 2013:
Seward Students in grades 1, 2 and 3 will be in 1-2-3 Elementary 1 classrooms in 2013-14 school year.
Specialist classes will remain single grades.
As we assign students to their E-1 classroom we will stick to our balancing policy for the new classrooms. Please know that students have many friends across current classrooms due to attending specialist class with their grade level and multiple classrooms at lunch and recess together.
Classroom assignments for 2013-14 will be on your child's report card in June.
