New Green Fundraising Projects
Support the PTSO's new, environmentally friendly fundraisers.  The PTSO has partnered with Terracycle and Ecophones to raise money for Seward Montessori while increasing our environmental stewardship.

ECOPHONES

Reduce waste!  Help the environment!  Raise money for the PTSO!  By collecting and recycling old electronics, you can help Seward Montessori and Mother Earth.

The PTSO Green Committee wants your old and unused:
•    Cell phones
•    Ink jet cartridges
•    Laptop/notebook computers
•    Digital cameras
•    Digital video cameras

Ecophones will give our school between 10¢ and $300 for each item, depending on its relative value, and will refurbish/recycle or safely dispose of the electronic waste.

Seventy-five percent of old electronics sit in closets and basements all over the country because people do not know how to dispose of them properly. Approximately 130 million cell phones are discarded or stockpiled each year in the U.S., creating 30,000 tons of potentially hazardous material.  E-waste contains toxic substances such as arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium, which, when not disposed of properly, either leaches into the soil and groundwater from landfills or form highly toxic dioxins during incineration.  To make matters worse, these electronic devices are made using valuable resources such as precious metals, engineered plastics, glass, and other materials that require energy to manufacture. When electronics are thrown away instead of refurbished or recycled, these materials are lost and more energy is required to produce new products from virgin resources.

About Ecophones:

Okay, you’re sold!  So, how can you help?

•    Clear out your own electronic clutter.  Ask your family members and friends to keep Seward Montessori in mind as they update their cell phones, digital cameras and laptops, and whenever they need to replace their ink jet cartridges.  Consider installing a collection bin at your work place.

•    Please make sure that what you want to drop off meets Ecophones specifications.  DO bring in old cell phones—but DON’T include accessories.  DO collect  ink jet cartridges, but NOT laser or toner cartridges (hint:  if the cartridge is larger than your hand, Ecophones won’t accept it).  Visit Ecophone’s website for more information, or email Diane Forest at diane.forest@yahoo.com.

•    Bring your collected items to school.  You will find a bin near the front entrance, just around the corner.

•    That’s it!  The Green Committee will take care of the rest!
THANK YOU!
