A Letter From the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians:

I am finishing the budget for the next school year as it is due in the district office May 12th. I want to especially thank the parents and teachers who met several times to work on budget issues. The committee appreciated the input received from staff and parents.

The school received enough money to continue to support all programs that are in place, and to add some hours in critical areas.  We were able to add 30 hours of Associate Educator time to our ESL Program, make our secretary full time, and add an Associate Educator to support the behavior program.  The staff and parents voted to expand our kindergartens to three all-day and two half-day sessions.  Offering more all-day kindergartens will give many of our neediest students greater exposure to school, and hopefully help get them off to a good start.

The Middle School teachers are about to reveal their new schedule for next year.  They have used most of their prep provider money to buy an additional science teacher.  The Middle School team will provide time to each other for prep.  This change will allow students some choices and variety in the classes they take.  There will be a Middle School meeting on May 11th at 5:00.  Parents of students in E-2 as well as current 6th and 7th grade parents will be invited.

Seward staff voted to continue the Teacher Advancement Program (TAP) for another two years.  This continuance will bring money to support many staff positions, such as three mentors, six coaches, and two reading/ESL support teachers.  There is also money for the staff to participate in individual bonuses based upon school-wide achievement, student’s individual achievement, and teacher instruction.  We are excited about the increased opportunities for job-embedded staff development, and the makeup of cluster teams.

There are several family activities this month.  I want to highlight “Amazing Asia” potluck dinner and activities on Friday, May 19th, 5:30-8:00 p.m.  There will be Thai dancing, featuring Seward students, a fashion show, and Taiko drumming.  It promises to be a spectacular evening for all.  Our PTSO has worked very hard to make this a memorable event.

We have several concerts this month.  Orchestra on Monday, May 22nd at 6:30, and Band on Monday, June 1st at 6:30. The E-1 students have three music performances on May 12th, May 22nd, and June 5th. Your E-1 students will have a note telling you which one they are in.

            See you at school,

            Dr. Marilyn
